OL Soccer team 1952

I played for the Old Lewesians football team from 1950 to 54 in the Lewes League and was their captain for two years. This photo was taken at Fairwarp in October 1952 and we won 3-2.

Sadly Mr Bradshaw was a fan of the oval ball and we were not offered a pitch and baths at the Schoolloke the Old Varndeanians or Brighton Grammarians. We were given a field out at Cooksbridge by a farmer whose son was in my class. We had to change in the malthouse and walk half a mile across ploughed fields. Imagine the Beckhams of this world doing that.

You may remember Mr Jarvis, my favourite teacher as geographywas my best subject. When I was demobbed in 1947 I was coming down on the train in my uniform carrying my parcel of civilian clothes when he got in at Haywards Heath. He went beserk! "Two stripes? You should have had two pips. No commission! You have let the school down! "
