MR N. R. BRADSHAW

Mr Bradshaw 1936 Following the death of Mr.Neville Rowland Bradshaw the first Headmaster of Lewes County Grammar School for Boys, the Sussex Express has received an appreciation of him from the Chief Education Officer of East Sussex, Mr J. Rendel Jones. Mr.Bradshaw, who was aged 78, lived in Kingston Road, Lewes. He was made a Freeman of the Borough of Lewes in 1960, the year he retired. Mr.Rendel Jones writes;

"I remember [as a pupil in his house] his leaving Taunton [School] in 1930 to become the first Headmaster of Lewes County Grammar School for Boys but I did not see him again until I was appointed Chief Education Officer in East Sussex. He had set out to make the school a place of academic distinction, strong athletically, and to some extent modelled on the Public School tradition within the limitations of a day school. He succeeded beyond all expectations.

His greatest achievement was undoubtedly the building of the School Chapel as a war memorial to the many Old Boys of the school.

Mr.Bradshaw was a member of the Education Committee for some years as a representative of the teachers. His name will always be connected with the Lewes County Grammar School and he will long be remembered by masters and pupils alike as a Headmaster of great distinction and great character."
